  • United States Institute of Peace (USIP). An independent, nonpartisan federal institution created and funded by the U.S. Congress to strengthen the United States' capacity to promote the peaceful resolution of international conflict. The Institute's Board of Directors is appointed by the President of the United States and confirmed by the Senate.

Truth commissions
"Truth commission" has become the designation for governmental organs intended to address the history and legacy of human rights abuses due to racial, ethnic, class, and ideological conflict in nations emerging from periods of such abuses. Generally, a truth commission is established for designated period of time and is mandated to investigate human rights abuses during a specific period of time in a particular nation or in reference to a specific conflict.Truth commissions are often complements or alternatives to other national responses, such as amnesty or criminal prosecution.
