Governing Bodies
- United Nations (UN). An
organization of sovereign nations providing the machinery to
help find solutions to international problems or disputes and
to deal with pressing concerns facing people everywhere.
- European Union (EU).
An association of fifteen member states in Europe -- Austria,
Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland,
Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden,
and the United Kingdom -- organized to promote economic and social
progress through a common market and common currency; to assert
the identity of the European Union on the international scene
through humanitarian aid to non-EU countries, common foreign
and security policy, action in international crises, and common
positions within international organisations); to introduce European
citizenship, which complements national citizenship and confers
its own civil and politic rights; to develop an area of freedom,
security and justice; and to maintain and build on established
EU law. The EU is preparing for its fifth enlargement since its
beginnings in 1951, this time in the direction of Eastern and
Southern Europe.
