Alaska Department of Law
The Department of Law is headed by the Attorney General, who is appointed by the Governor. The department prosecutes violations of state criminal laws, acts as the Governor’s legal advisor, and provides legal services to Alaska executive agencies and, in some instances, Alaska legislative and judicial branches.

  • Criminal Division. The Criminal Division prosecutes all violations of state criminal law committed by adults and some serious crimes committed by juveniles. It also represents the State of Alaska in criminal appellate proceedings and state and federal post-conviction and habeas corpus proceeds; provides basic legal services to the Departments of Corrections and Public Safety; and assists victims and witnesses of crimes. Many services of the division are provided through regional district attorney offices.
  • Civil Division. The Civil Division provides legal counsel to the Alaska executive branch agencies in civil actions, defending and prosecuting civil litigation to which the state is a party. It acts as legal counsel to the Governor, to executive branch agencies, and, upon request, to the legislative and judicial branches. The division also drafts legislation for introduction by the governor, reviews legislation before it is acted upon by the governor, and reviews regulations prepared by executive agencies.
  • Administrative Division. Provides services essential to the department's day-to-day operations.
