Alaska juvenile corrections

Until 1999, juvenile corrections in Alaska was under the jurisidiction of the Youth Corrections section of the Alaska Division of Family and Youth Services (DFYS) in the Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS). However, on July 1, 1999 a new division in DHSS, the Division of Juvenile Justice (DJJ), assumed responsibility for juvenile corrections in the state.

Alaska Division of Juvenile Justice (DJJ)
DJJ is charged with holding juvenile offenders in Alaska accountable for their behavior, promoting the safety and restoration of victims and communities, and assisting offenders and their families in developing skills to prevent crime. DJJ operates five youth detention facilities in Alaska.

  • McLaughlin Youth Center (MYC). Anchorage. Alaska's largest youth facility. MYC services include secure detention and the bulk of the state’s treatment programs for juvenile offenders.
  • Fairbanks Youth Facility. Serves communities in DJJ's Northern Region. Services include a Detention Unit and a Treatment.
  • Nome Youth Facility
  • Bethel Youth Facility
  • Johnson Youth Center. Juneau.
