Alaska
Division of Elections
The Alaska Division of Elections is
responsible for the planning and administration of statewide elections,
as well as local and regional elections in unorganized boroughs. It also
maintains the voter registration records of more than 400,000 Alaskans
and processes statewide initiative, recall, and referendum petitions.
Alaska
Public Offices Commission (APOC)
APOC is a state regulatory agency which
upholds laws regarding the public's right to know the financial affairs
of public officials, candidates for state and municipal office, and lobbyists
and their employers.
Redistricting
Every 10 years, after the federal
census, Alaska and other states must redraw the boundaries of legislative
election districts to make them equal in population. In many states redistricting
is conducted by the legislature, but Alaska's Constitution delegates this
power to an independent advisory board. Its five members are appointed:
two members are appointed by the governor, one by the president of the
Senate, one by the speaker of the House, and one by the chief justice
of the Alaska Supreme Court
