Sen. Stevens became a U.S.
Senator in 1968, when he was appointed by Gov. Wally Hickel,
at the death of Sen. E.L. Bob Bartlett, to fill Sen. Bartlett's
position. He won election in 1970 to complete Sen. Bartlett's
term. In 1972 he was reelected to a full term, and has won reelection
