Project Chariot
Nuclear testing
on Amchitka Island
Amchitka Island, about
1,400 miles (2,300 kilometers) southwest of Anchorage is the
southernmost of the Rat Island Group in the Aleutian chain. It
was the site of three underground nuclear detonations conducted
in October 1965, October 1969, and November 1971, and is the
subject of federal cleanup efforts by the Nevada Offsite Program
of the Office of Environmental Management of the U.S. Department
of Energy. The test areas will eventually be transferred to the
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for incorporation into the Alaska
Maritime National Wildlife Refuge (formerly Aleutian National
Wildlife Refuge).
