Estimates from the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) indicate that over 1,000,000 instances of violent crime against persons were committed by current or former spouses, girlfriends, or boyfriends in the U.S. in 1998; at least 791,210 such crimes were committed in 1999. About 85 percent of victimizations by intimate partners are against women (of which approximately 2 percent is between same-sex partners), 15 percent against men (of which 10 percent is between same sex partners). Intimate partner violence ranges from simple or aggravated assault to rape/sexual assault to murder.
