violence |
Estimates from the National
Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) indicate that over 1,000,000
instances of violent crime against persons were committed by
current or former spouses, girlfriends, or boyfriends in the
U.S. in 1998; at least 791,210 such crimes were committed in
1999. About 85 percent of victimizations by intimate partners
are against women (of which approximately 2 percent is between
same-sex partners), 15 percent against men (of which 10 percent
is between same sex partners). Intimate partner violence ranges
from simple or aggravated assault to rape/sexual assault to murder.
