Prison history

  • Correctional Photo Archives. Eastern Kentucky University, Department of Corrections and Juvenile Justice Studies. Photographs from the archives of the American Correctional Association and from various federal depicting prison life and conditions in the early 20th century, particularly in the U.S.: living conditions, recreation, prison industries, health care, punishment, prison work gangs, prison architecture, death row, etc.

Prison ships

  • The Ship Success by Richard J. Norgard. HMS Success was launched in Burma in 1840 and saw service as a receiving prison ship in Victoria, Australia, from 1852 to 1869. Later refurbished as an exhibition ship, it visited ports in Australia, Britain, and the U.S. trading on its falsified history as a convict transport ship. It was torched by arsonists in Ohio on July 4, 1946. This site includes a history, photographs, and links.
