State of Alaska
Judges preside over court hearings, instruct
witnesses and jurors, hear and decide questions of law, and sentence
criminal defendants. Candidates for judicial positions must be
5-year Alaska residents, engaged in the practice of law in Alaska
for a minimum period, and must be licensed to practice law in
Alaska. Magistrates have less authority than judges. They
issue search and arrest warrants, try and sentence violations,
try and sentence misdemeanor cases with the consent of the defendant,
and conduct felony bail hearings. Court clerks peform
a variety of clerical support functions for the Alaska Court
System, including such duties as preparing complaints for courtroom
arraignments, collecting bail money or fines, performing basic
bookkeeping, and preparing a variety of forms. Job requirements
typically are high school graduation and clerical experience.
