Alaska is frequently the state with the highest rate of forcible rape. The Justice Center and the Forensic Nurses Association of Alaska have established a partnership to obtain a better understanding of this statewide problem. The objective of this partnership is to investigate the epidemiology of sexual assaults reported in Alaska and to examine the effects of alcohol use on the characteristics, processes, and outcomes of reported sexual assaults. The funding will provide 1) collect and analyze data from all forensic evaluations of sexual assault victims by the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) throughout AK. 2) examine the spatial patterning of reported sexual assaults in Anchorage. 3) describe and identify the causes and consequences of time elapsed between the assault and the report; and 4) examine the effect of substance use on anogenital injuries. The products of the proposed research include the development of statewide database system to document and track reported suxual assault incidents. In addition, this project will provide a knowledge base of empirical evidence that policy makers and practitioners can use for decision-making and expert testimony.
