There is a perception among many in Anchorage that youth violence is becoming more serious and more frequent. Readily available data, such as trends in youth arrests for violent index crimes in Anchorage, do not support this assumption. In spite of this, and largely in reaction to rare events, there are episodi clamors for something to be done about this putative problem.

In reponse to the current demand for more information about youth violence in Anchorage, the Justice Center is developing a database based on juvenile criminal history information maintained by Anchorage Police Department and other criminal justice agencies to support a description of the nature and structure of youth violence in Anchorage. In cooperation with the Municipality of Anchorage's Youth Violence Initiative, is working to identify policies and programs to prevent and reduce youth violence in Anchorage.
