Abstract: Youth courts act as an restorative justice alternative to the formal juvenile justice system for minor and first-time offenders. The youth court process is entirely handled by youth volunteers who have received special training in informally adjudicating other youth. During an Alaska statewide youth court conference in November 2003, a total of 22 youth court volunteers representing 14 youth courts in Alaska participated in focus groups to help assess the experience of volunteering for youth courts and to seek input in ways to improve volunteer recruitment and sustainability. This report documents the several recommendations to improve the recruitment and retention of skilled volunteers made by focus group volunteers.
