Under the Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990 (CACSA) and its amendments, U.S. institutions of higher education are required to compile annual statistics on the number of murders, sex offenses, robberies, aggravated assaults, burglaries, and motor vehicle thefts reported on their campuses. Statistics must be also be compiled on hate crimes, in which the victim is intentionally selected because of the actual or perceived race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or disability of the victim. The number of arrests for liquor law violations, drug abuse violations, and weapons possession violations must also be reported.
The Justice Center has compiled required CACSA statistics, as well as statistics on arson and theft/larceny incidents and Minor Consuming Alcohol (MCA) citations, for University of Alaska Anchorage (and in some years for other University of Alaska units) since 1991 under the project title University of Alaska Implementation of the Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990 (CACSA). This project continues the Justice Center's work in this area.
