Schafer Receives NIJ Grant to Initiate Statewide Community Jails Research Consortium

Professor Nancy Schafer of the Justice Center at the University of Alaska Anchorage has received a $50,000 grant from the National Institute of Justice to begin organizing a Community Jails Research Consortium.
     The project will assess the research needs of jails throughout the state, seek funds to underwrite the research and conduct initial studies. All fifteen community jails will be eligible for membership in the consortium.
     One demonstration project will assess the impact of protective custody holds on the jails. Another project will compose a profile of each jail in order to identify common issues and problems.
