Abstract: Employment turnover in the Alaska Public Safety Officer (VPSO) Program has been a problem since its beginnings in the early 1980s. This paper uses principal component analysis methods to identify factors from the responses of 113 VPSOs to a survey of about officer stress, the demands of rural policing, isolation, career motivation, salary, and organizational and community support. The factors identified in the principal component analysis are then used in a Cox regression model to predict the likelihood of turnover. Comparisons are made between the factors associated with turnover among Alaska Native and non-Native VPSOs.
