Researchers from the Justice Center and the UAA Center
forAlcohol and Addiction Studies explored the disposition of
subjects arrested for driving while intoxicated (DWI) in order
to develop a better understanding of the DWI adjudication process
within the Anchorage criminal justice system. The study was intended
to enhance understanding of the criminal justice system's capacities
and resources to handle DWI offenders by examining the flow of
DWI suspects through the criminal justice system from arrest
to disposition and to provide information necessary to determine
where programs are needed and will establish benchmarks for future
program evaluation and needs assessments.
Under the project, researchers
conducted a literature review that examined other studies relating
to legal and extralegal factors affecting court processing of
offenders. Records of the Anchorage Police Department, the Third
Judicial District of the Alaska Court System, the Anchorage Municipal
Prosecutor, and the Anchorage District Attorney were reviewed
to collect data relating to the DWI arrests and court dispositions
during 1996.
