The Alaska Justice Statistical Analysis Unit (SAU) at the Justice Center, University of Alaska Anchorage, has received a grant of $175,000 from the Bureau of Justice Statistics to examine and make recommendations on state data collection as required by the Brady Bill. The bill establishes controls on firearms purchases and necessitates background checks. The SAU study will look at data retention on certain non-criminal groups falling under the provisions of the bill, such as the mentally handicapped, illegal aliens, individuals addicted to controlled substances, and individuals subject to domestic violence court restraining orders. Dr. Lawrence Trostle will serve as principal investigator for the project.
