The Justice Center offered an intensive program during summer 1995 for minority students interested in pursuing careers in the justice system. During the program students were exposed to traditional and nontraditional careers in the justice system, including mediation, community policing, corrections, courts, and tribal judicial systems. Students also examined the processes and techniques used in selecting people for positions in the justice field.
In the classroom component of the program students worked with guest lecturers, including minority members of various justice professions, and Justice Center faculty on topic involving justice processes, studies, policy, and current trends. Classroom knowledge was further enriched by field observations at prisons, courts, law enforcement agencies, and legal offices.
The interernship component of the program introduced students to the workplace by placing each student in a justice agency in order to garner realistic knowledge about the preparation and skills necessary to enter careers in the justice system.
