In spite of efforts made to encourage greater recruitment and retention of Alaska Natives, only approximately 6 percent of those employed by the Alaska Department of Corrections are recruited from the Native community, whereas Alaska Natives comprise approximately 16 percent of Alaska's total population.

In an effort to identify potential barriers to employment of Alaska Natives in the Alaska correctional system, the Justice Center conducted focus groups with young adults living in areas where there are opportunities for employment with the state correctional system -- Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, Bethel, Kenai-Soldotna, Seward, and Nome. One goal of the project was to contribute to increased possibilities for employment within the justice system for Alaska Natives.
