Formed in 1993 as a nonprofit 501(c)3 corporation and based in Anchorage, the Alaska Native Justice Center (ANJC) has a statewide focus and mission:

  • To promote the interests of Alaska Natives in the local, state, and federal justice systems;
  • To promote the interests of Alaska Native victims of crimes; and
  • To promote fair treatment of Alaska Natives in all aspects of the judicial system, including the criminal defense system and the prison system.

     The Justice Center conducted background research and consultation in the development of programs of the Alaska Native Justice Center (ANJC). It was anticipated that this collaboration will lead to the development of specific programs to be administered by ANJC in its mission to promote the justice welfare of the Alaska Native community.
     In an effort to acquaint Alaska Natives with justice occupations available in Alaska the partnership conducted the two-week Alaska Native Justice Careers Seminar in May 1998. The seminar was designed to introduce Alaska Native students to the variety of career opportunities in the justice system. The seminar encouraged Alaska Native students to consider careers in the system as police or correctional officers, court personnel, judges, magistrates, attorneys, or paralegals. The intensive seminar included both classroom instruction and tours through Anchorage-area justice institutions. The program was designed to be offered on a periodic basis by the Alaska Native Justice Center.
