Transforming the Police
in South Africa

June 16, 1997

     Janine Rauch, Chief Director of Policy and National Crime Prevention Strategy for the Republic of South Africa, will teach "Contemporary Justice Issues: Policing and Race" at the Justice Center at the University of Alaska Anchorage for the second summer session -- July 7 - August 9. The course will examine the issues involved in transforming policing in South Africa into an instrument of democracy. In particular, it will address the difficulties of reducing corruption and establishing a human rights culture in police service; organizational change and affirmative action; and responses to growing crime problems.
     Ms. Rauch has been Coordinator of the Policing Research Project at the Center for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation on South Africa and has served as policy adviser to the Ministry of Safety and Security for the government of South Africa.
     The course carries three credits. Information about class registration can be obtained from the Justice Center, 786-1810.
