- "Justice Center Celebrates 25th Anniversary":
The Justice Center has completed its 25th year as a research, academic
and public education institution (December 1, 2000).
- "Langworthy Accepts 14-Month NIJ Appointment":
Dr. Robert Langworthy, Director of the Justice Center, has accepted
a 14-month appointment at the National Institute of Justice. Dr. Nancy
Schafer is Acting Director in his absence (August 11, 2000).
- "Scholarship Recipients Announced":
Five Alaska Native students have received $5,000 scholarships for the
2000-2001 academic year through a gift from Cook Inlet Region, Inc.
(August 8, 2000).
- "Turnover
of VPSOs: Study Completed": A study of officer turnover in
the Alaska Village Public Safety Officer (VPSO) program has been completed
by Dr. Darryl Wood (April 26, 2000).
- "Community
Jails Consortium Holds Anchorage Workshop": Administrators
of Alaska community jails meet in Anchorage under the auspices of the
Statewide Community Jails Research Consortium (March 17, 1999).
- "Schafer
Receives NIJ Grant to Initiate Statewide Community Jails Research Consortium":
Dr. Nancy Schafer has received a $50,000 grant from the National Institute
of Justice to initiate a research consortium of Alaska's 15 community
jails (December 9, 1998).
- "Justice Club Sponsors Human Rights Forum":
"Bringing Human Rights Home" will focus on the topics of the
death penalty, immigrant's rights, prisoner's rights and habeas corpus
relief (November 2, 1998).
- "Rieger Receives
NSF Grant to Study Indian Child Welfare in Kake": Professor
Lisa Rieger has received a $50,000 grant from the National Science Foundation
for a pilot study examining the Kake Tlingit community's efforts to
address child welfare (September 28, 1998).
- "Riley to
Examine Careers in Corrections for Alaska Natives": Dr. John
Riley will examine the attitudes of Alaska Natives towards careers within
the correctional system (September 17, 1998).
- "Wood Receives
NIJ Grant to Study VPSO Attrition": Dr. Darryl Wood has received
a grant of $50,000 from the National Institute of Justice to study the
issue of attrition within the Village Public Safety Officer (VPSO) program
(June 15, 1998).
- "Juvenile
Referrals in Alaska Examined by Race": Release of the Justice
Center report A Comparison by Race of Juvenile Referrals in Alaska:
Phase II Report, which examines 112 individual files in an attempt
to identify factors which might be associated with the decision to refer
a child to the Alaska juvenile justice system (June 8, 1998).
- "New Criminal Justice Emphasis in MPA
Program": Announcing the creation of a Criminal Justice emphasis
in the Master of Public Administration program (April 8, 1998).
- "Research on Crime in Canadian Inuit Communities
Basis for Doctorate": Darryl Wood, an assistant professor with
the Justice Center, has received his doctorate from the School of Criminology
at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia. His dissertation was
based on research on violent crime in twelve Inuit communities in the
eastern Canadian Arctic and may have implications for Alaska (October
6, 1997).
- "Disproportionate
Referrals of Alaska Native and African American Youth": Release
of the Justice Center report Disproportionate Representation of Minorities
in the Alaska Juvenile Justice System, which finds that Alaska Native
and African American youth are referred to the Division of Family and
Youth Services in numbers disproportionate to their representation in
the population as a whole (June 25, 1997).
- "Transforming the Police in South Africa":
A summer course taught by Janine Rauch, Chief Director of Policy and
National Crime Prevention Strategy for the Republic of South Africa,
looks at police reform in South Africa after the dismantling of apartheid
(June 16, 1997).
- "New Director Named": Dr. Robert
Langworthy joins the Justice Center as its new Director (June 3, 1997).
- "Sex Offender
Recidivism Study": Release by the Alaska Department of Corrections
of the report Sex Offender Treatment Program: Initial Recidivism
Study, a 4-year study completed by the Department of Corrections
and the Justice Center's Alaska Justice Statistical Analysis Unit (August
19, 1996).
- "Brady Bill
Grant": Receipt of a $175,000 grant to examine retention of
data on non-criminal groups falling under the provisions of the Brady
firearm control law (June 26, 1996).
- "Public Safety
in Village Alaska": Release of the report Public Safety
and Policing in Alaska Native Villages (March 17, 1996).
- "Public Perceptions
of Crime": Release of the Alaska Public Safety Statewide
Survey report (January 23, 1996).
