Abstract: A comprehensive overview of local dispute organizations in rural Alaska, many of which are tribal courts or village councils, including a directory of organizations, a discussion of their interactions with state and local governments, and recommendations. Also included is a summary of the history and legal systems of the major Alaska Native groups -- Inupiaq, Yup'ik, Alutiiq, Athabascan, and Southeast Indians (Tlingit/Haida) -- before European contact and their evolution since.
