The biannual Anchorage Community Survey provides one of the most detailed pictures available of community attitudes within the network of communities forming the Anchorage municipality. The survey reports contain information on the demographics of residents, their perceptions of the life in their neighborhoods, social activities and organizations, and their satisfaction with various municipal and government functions, including policing.

Background on the Municipality of Anchorage

The Municipality of Anchorage encompasses 1,956 square miles of land, and contains an estimated 296,197 residents in 2011. These residents are located within the city of Anchorage, and the communities of Girdwood, Turnagain, Eagle River, Chugiak, and Eklutna, as well as Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER).

The largest city in Alaska, Anchorage serves as a major hub for trade, with the Ted Stevens International Airport, Alaska Railroad, Port of Anchorage, and the highway system all converging to create a trade nexus not just for the state of Alaska, but for the United States and surrounding nations as well. Unemployment is estimated at 4.9% as of November 2012.

Law enforcement is handled by the Anchorage Police Department. Medical Services are provided by three major hospitals and numerous clinics, and fire services are provided by local and volunteer fire companies throughout the Municipality.

Anchorage Community Indicators    

Series 1: Anchorage Community Survey 2003 presents results taken from the Anchorage Community Survey, a telephone survey conducted by the Justice Center in the spring of 2003, focusing on respondents attitudes on five issues — schools, public transportation, snow removal, police performance, emergency medical services — and on residential stability.

Series 2: Sexual Assault Study presents information about sexual assaults in Anchorage based on sexual assaults reported to the Anchorage Police Department in 2000–2001.

Series 3: Neighborhood Characteristics & Police Calls for Service examines the strength of association between neighborhood characteristics, such as housing density and population density, with levels of crime and social deviance in those neighborhoods as measured by police calls for service in 2003.
