Background on the Municipality of Anchorage : Incorporated in 1920, the Municipality of Anchorage encompasses 1,956 square miles of land, and contains an estimated 282,813 residents. These residents are located within the city of Anchorage, and the communities of Girdwood, Turnagain, Eagle River, Chugiak, and Eklutna, as well as on the several military installations (Elmendorf Air Force Base, the US Army's Fort Richardson, and Kulis Air National Guard Base) located within the Municipality.

The largest city in Alaska, Anchorage serves as a major hub for trade, with the Ted Stevens International Airport, Alaska Railroad, Port of Anchorage, and the highway system all converging to create a trade nexus not just for the State of Alaska, but for the United States and surrounding nations as well. Unemployment for 2007 is estimated at 5.1%. Law enforcement is handled by the Anchorage Police Department. Medical Services are provided by three major hospitals and numerous clinics, and fire services are provided by local and volunteer fire companies throughout the Municipality.

Anchorage Community Data CVS 2002 Pubfile Data.sav: This file contains the questions as they were asked of respondents to the Crime Victimization Survey, along with information on coding responses to each question that comprise the variables in CVS 2002 Pubfile Data.sav. CVS 2002 Codebook.pdf: This file explains the meanings/representations of the the codes and variable names in CVS 2002 Pubfile Data.sav. Anchorage Community Indicators data sets.pdf: The Anchorage Community Survey is a biannual study conducted by the Justice Center at the University of Alaska Anchorage as a principal component of the Community Indicators Project at UAA. As the premier source of data on Anchorage Community Indicators, the ACS also provides insight into the communities of Anchorage, Girdwood and Eagle River. This document explains the various datasets, collection methods, and variables of the 2005 survey. ACS Pubfile.sav: The data collected in the course of the 2005 Anchorage Community Survey in SPSS format. BlockGroupMeasures.sav: A description of the 214 census block groups within the city of Anchorage, including composite measures derived from the 2000 Census of Population and Housing (documented in ACI Technical Report Initial Measures derived from Census) and dispatch measures derived from APD dispatch data files (documented in Anchorage Police Department Dispatch Data). The variables included are listed in the appendix tables of Anchorage Community Indicators data sets.pdf. CTractMeasures.sav: A census tract level of aggregation of the 214 census blocks into the 55 census tracts that compose the city of Anchorage. Also includes composite measures derived from the 2000 Census of Population and Housing (documented in ACI Technical Report Initial Measures derived from Census) and dispatch measures derived from APD dispatch data files (documented in Anchorage Police Department Dispatch Data). Anchorage Community Indicators Series 1 presents results taken from the Anchorage Community Survey, a telephone survey conducted by the Justice Center in the spring of 2003, focusing on respondents' attitudes on five issues -- schools, public transportation, snow removal, police performance, emergency medical services -- and on residential stability. Series 2 presents information about sexual assaults in Anchorage based on sexual assaults reported to the Anchorage Police Department in 2000-2001. Series 3 examines the strength of association between neighborhood characteristics, such as housing density and population density, with levels of crime and social deviance in those neighborhoods. In other words, housing density, population density, and other characteristics of Anchorage bowl neighborhoods are compared with the rate of police calls for service to examine the relationship between neighborhood characteristics and crime. Series 3a. The Strength of Community-level Rates of Association. This subseries maps neighborhood characteristics by census block area, and highlights the correlation or lack of correlation between those characteristics and the level of crime and social deviance in the neighborhood as measured by police calls for service. Maps in this subseries should be compared with the maps in Series 3b for a full picture of the "strength of association."
