King Cove Police Department serves about 792 year-round residents (as of the 2000 census) and 500 nonresidents employed seasonally at the Peter Pan seafood cannery. The department was formed in 1949 and generally employs a police chief, three sworn officers, a VPSO, and a clerk/dispatcher. King Cove P.D. is one of about 43 local police departments in Alaska.
King Cove's economy is almost entirely dependent on commercial fishing and seafood processing. It is located on the Alaska Peninsula near Cold Bay and the Aleutian Islands, and is accessible only by air or sea.
King Cove is one of about 50 communities visited in 2000 by Justice Center researchers monitoring Alaska's compliance with the federal Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act of 1974. The Justice Center has conducted monitoring activities since 1988 under contract with the Alaska Division of Family and Youth Services and (since 1999) the Alaska Division of Juvenile Justice.
