Federal courthouse in Juneau.
Convicted murderer
Edward Krause
escaped from the federal jail in the courthouse basement in April 1917, two days before his scheduled execution. Nelson Charles, one of eight men executed in Territorial Alaska, was hanged here in 1939, as is recounted in
"The Trial and Hanging of Nelson Charles"
by Averil Lerman. See also a view of
Juneau in 1917, with the courthouse in the distance.
