"Homicide in Alaska"

This article presents statistics from 1975 to 1995 on murder and nonnegligent manslaughter in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, and Alaska overall, and compares Alaska rates with homicide rates nationwide. Weapons used and the relationship between victim and offender in Alaska homicides are also discussed, and figures on other causes of death in Alaska provide perspective on the murder rate.

During 1995, sixteen states executed 56 prisoners, the largest number of prisoners executed in a year in the U.S. since 1960. A total of 313 executions have taken place since 1977. The full report upon which this article is based is available from the Bureau of Justice Statistics.

"The Death Penalty: An International Perspective"

This article examines the use of capital punishment by other countries, showing which countries have abolished the death penalty, which currently retain it, and which nations are parties to international anti-death penalty treaties.
