"Bush Justice Report"
This is the second of two articles summarizing the major conclusions and recommendations of Alaskan Village Justice: An Exploratory Study (February 1979) by John E. Angell, the first comprehensive study of public safety and the criminal justice systerm in the predominately Alaska Native villages of rural or "bush" Alaska. Among the study's findings discussed in this article is the persistence of traditional law ways and the development of a hybrid system in which the Anglo-American justice system has been utilized to accomplish the aims of traditional law ways, with unsatisfactory results. Village perspectives on justice services including police services, legal and judicial services, and prisoner detention and corrections are described.
