| Justice Center, University of Alaska Anchorage. (Feb 1979). "Village Police Training." Alaska Justice Forum 3(2): 1, 12. This article summarizes major findings and recommendations from an evaluation of the Alaska Department of Public Safety's Village Police Training Program, which trained village police officers for service in predominately Alaska Native villages. The evaluation report, Alaska Village Police Training: An Assessment and Recommendations by John E. Angell (December 1978), found that from 1971 to 1978 nearly three-quarters of a million dollars were invested in training village police officers. However, of 292 people trained since the program's inception, only 70 were still serving in their villages as of late 1978. Havelock, John E. (Feb 1979). "Book Review: Criminal Violence, Criminal Justice." Alaska Justice Forum 3(2): 2-3. This article reviews Charles Silberman's Criminal Violence, Criminal Justice (New York: Random House, 1978), which argues—persuasively—that in spite of popular views, virtually all real criminals are eventually caught and punished. Justice Center, University of Alaska Anchorage. (Feb 1979). "Petition for Review: State v. Sundberg." Alaska Justice Forum 3(2): 3. This article summarizes a petition for review filed by the Alaska Department of Law with the Alaska Supreme Court in the case of State v. Sundberg, which involved a police shooting of a suspect who ran from the scene of a burglary. A lower court ruled that excessive force was used in making the arrest, suppressed evidence obtained as a result of the arrest, and declared unconstitutional an Alaska Statute which permitted a peace officer to use deadly force to apprehend a suspect who was not a threat to the officer or any other person. Justice Center, University of Alaska Anchorage. (Feb 1979). "Opinions of Note." Alaska Justice Forum 3(2): 4-7. Brief digests of Alaska Supreme Court opinions and the criminal justice issues involved. Justice Center, University of Alaska Anchorage. (Feb 1979). "Points on Appeal." Alaska Justice Forum 3(2): 8-11. Brief descriptions of points being raised in criminal appeals filed with the Alaska Supreme Court. Justice Center, University of Alaska Anchorage. (Feb 1979). "Justice Training Calendar." Alaska Justice Forum 3(2): 13-15. A calendar of justice training opportunities nationally. Justice Center, University of Alaska Anchorage. (Feb 1979). "Proposed Legislation." Alaska Justice Forum 3(2): 16. Brief descriptions of legislation related to criminal justice introduced during the first week of the 1979 Alaska legislative session. |
