Alaska

  • Paralegal Certificate Program. Justice Center, University of Alaska Anchorage.
  • Alaska Association of Paralegals (formerly Alaska Association of Legal Assistants). AAP was founded in 1981 as a professional association of Alaska paralegals, and is a member organization of the National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA).

Paralegal education

  • Paralegal Certificate Program. Justice Center, University of Alaska Anchorage.
  • ABA Standing Committee On Legal Assistants. The UAA Justice Center Paralegal Certificate program is among approximately 205 legal assistant education programs nationwide to achieve American Bar Association approval through this ABA committee, which has jurisdiction relating to the education, training, and use of legal assistants or legal paraprofessionals and, through its Approval Commission, sets standards for legal assistant education and training.
  • American Association for Paralegal Education (AAfPE). Established in 1981, AAfPE is a national organization which serves paralegal education and institutions which offer paralegal education programs.
  • Paralegal Studies: Distance Learning Programs. Directory of distance education programs ("correspondence" courses) which offer paralegal certificates.

Professional associations

  • National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA). National professional association which provides continuing education and professional certification programs for paralegals/legal assistants. The Fairbanks Association of Legal Assistants is a NALA-affiliated organization.
  • National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA). National professional association which provides continuing education and professional certification programs for paralegals/legal assistants. NFPA also welcomes student members, who may join either as individual sustaining members or by becoming members of a local association (thereby getting two memberships for the price of one). For Alaska, the local association would be the Alaska Association of Paralegals (AAP).

Publications

  • National Paralegal Reporter. A quarterly magazine for NFPA members; recent issues are on-line, as is a cumulative index of issues from 1976 to the present.
  • Legal Assistant Today. An independent trade magazine geared toward the needs of the paralegal profession. The issue archive offers an overview and selected articles from recent issues. The LAT News Bulletin is a free email service updating its subscrbers on breaking news, press release information, and previews of the stories in upcoming issues of the magazine.
  • Nonlawyer Activity in Law-Related Situations: A Report with Recommendations. American Bar Association Commission on Nonlawyer Practice, 1995. Results of and recommendations from a nationwide study on the implications of nonlawyer (including paralegal) practice for society, clients, and the legal profession.
