The Alaska Victimization Survey (AVS) is designed to provide reliable and valid estimates of intimate partner violence and sexual violence against women.

Results from the survey are used to:

  • guide planning and policy development,
  • effectively evaluate the impact of prevention and intervention services, and
  • provide greater empirical support for preventing and responding to violence against women.

The Compass article "So many Alaska women still suffer violence — and their courage is a marvel" by André B. Rosay, Director of the UAA Justice Center, and Lauree Morton, Executive Director of the Alaska Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, was published by the Anchorage Daily News online on November 5, 2012 and in its November 6, 2012 print issue. It was republished as "Survey reflects shocking side of Alaska" in the print-only Anchorage Daily News Community Xtra! on November 14.

AVS data is also presented in the the Sitka Youth Leadership Committee Video which focuses on young people and promotes healthy relationships. The video presents data from the 2010 Statewide Alaska Victimization Survey and the 2010 Olweus Bulling Questionnaire/Blatchley Middle School Report. It notes the relationship between domestic violence and bullying, and documents a conversation about bullying and its antidote: community, connection, and belonging. Release of 2012 Alaska Victimization Survey results for Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta (22 Oct 2012)

The results of the 2012 Victimization Survey for the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta were released at a press conference on October 22 in Bethel.  Findings include:

  • Over half of adult women in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta have experienced intimate partner violence, sexual violence or both, in their lifetime;
  •  Nearly 17% have experienced intimate partner violence, sexual violence or both, in the past year;
  • One out of every four adult women in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta have experienced sexual violence in their lifetime; and 
  • More than four out of every 10 have experienced intimate partner violence in their lifetime.

The results of the 2012 Victimization Survey for the City and Borough of Sitka were released at a press conference on October 19 in Sitka. Findings include:

  • 47% of adult women in the City and Borough of Sitka have experienced intimate partner violence, sexual violence or both, in their lifetime;
  •  Nearly 7% have experienced intimate partner violence, sexual violence or both, in the past year;
  • One out of every four adult women in the City and Borough of Sitka have experienced sexual violence in their lifetime; and 
  • Four out of every 10 have experienced intimate partner violence in their lifetime.

The results of the 2012 Victimization Survey for the Kodiak Island Borough was conducted from March to May 2012 in the Kodiak Island Borough.  Findings include:

  • Nearly 44% of adult women in the Kodiak Island Borough have experienced intimate partner violence, sexual violence or both, in their lifetime;
  • Over 6% have experienced intimate partner violence, sexual violence or both, in the past year;
  • More than 1 out of every 5 adult women in the Kodiak Island Borough have experienced sexual violence in their lifetime; and 
  • More than 1 out of every 3 have experienced intimate partner violence in their lifetime.

Data from the Alaska Victimization Survey was cited in an article in First Alaskans magazine, "Alaska's Top Cop," about Alaska Department of Public Safety Commissioner Joe Masters, who was an early advocate of a victimization survey in Alaska. AVS data cited by Alaska Federation of Natives in letter to Congressman Don Young in support of VAWA (7 May 2012)

The Alaska Federation of Natives (AFN) cite Alaska Victimization Survey (AVS) data and other Justice Center research on violence against Ahtna and Athabascan women in a May 7, 2012 letter to Alaska Congressman Don Young.   The letter urged Congressman Young  to "include provisions that will enable Tribal governments in Alaska to more effectively combat an epidemic of domestic violence aginst Native American and Alaska Native women, as you consider any Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) authorization."

The UAA Justice Center and the Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (CDVSA) held a joint press conference on September 30 to introduce the results of the 2010 Alaska Victimization Survey conducted by the Justice Center through a contract with CDVSA. Researchers surveyed 871 women throughout Alaska by telephone in May–June 2010.
