Vincent W. & Mary Root Outstanding Paralegal Student Award

  The Vincent W. Root and Mary Root estates donated funds to the University of Alaska Anchorage Paralegal Studies Certificate Program sufficient to establish an ongoing scholarship award for its outstanding students. The award will be given in the amount of $500 to a student selected by the Paralegal Scholarship Committee, comprised of members of the Paralegal Studies Program’s Advisory Board.

Application materials required

The application form is available here in Adobe Acrobat .pdf format. This form includes several questions, as well as complete application instructions. Additionally, the following attachments are required:

  • Proof of Admission to the Paralegal Certificate Program by the submission date.
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation.
  • Your current, unofficial UAA transcript.
  • A hard copy of your essay on this semester’s competition topic (see below).
  • In addition, an electronic copy of your Competition Essay must be submitted by the Competition Deadline to the Program Coordinator, Pamela R. Kelley, at afprk@uaa.alaska.edu. The electronic copy must be submitted in PDF, .doc, .htm or .rtf formats. No other format will be accepted. Failure to include an electronic submission will prevent your Scholarship Application from being complete.

All incomplete applications will be rejected.

Spring 2008 competition topic

In an essay of 2,500 words or less, address the following topic:

After analyzing Alaskans for A Common Language v. Kritz, 170 P.3d 183 (Alaska 2007), do you agree with the majority or dissent, and why?

The applicant should not undertake additional independent research in preparing the essay, but rather focus on providing a clear exposition of the student's view in answer to the question presented.
